In His New One-Man Show, a #8216;People Hacker#8217; Becomes Steve Jobs

In His New One-Man Show, a 8216People Hacker8217 Becomes Steve Jobs In His New One-Man Show, a 8216People Hacker8217 Becomes Steve Jobs RecruiterTodaycontributor, author, speaker, psychiatrist, and self-described people hacker Dr. Mark Goulstonis one of many people who recognize the lessons that Jobss life and career hold for todays professionals. Thats why he recently devised Steve Jobs Returns How to Build a Visionary Company,a combination keynote speech and one-man show in which Goulston takes on the role of Steve Jobs in order to teach people about the ten iterative, Lego-like steps that Jobs followed to make Apple insanely great.Goulston believes that Jobss business talent was no preternatural gift no, it came from a set of concrete actionshe took that anyone canfollow.I probably dont have to tell you how unique theidea of delivering a keynote speech in the form of a one-man show is. When Goulston mentioned this project to me, I knew I had to learn more. So, we engaged in a quick email QA, which is reproduced below, minimally edited for style and clarityPreview announcement of Steve Jobs Returns Connecting the Dotsfrom Mark Goulston on Vimeo.Recruiter.com How did the idea for this performance come about?Dr. Mark GoulstonFor the past year and a half, I had been giving a presentation called Hacking Steve Jobs The Secret to Creating Gotta Have It at a variety of venues, including tech and healthcare CEO roundtables, innovation conferences, and entrepreneurial groups. In it, I explained the four-step formula Jobs unconsciously followed to cause customers to respond with Gotta have it when new products were introduced. Thats because when you cause people to think Gotta have it you dont have to persuade or sell to them. You just take orders.By the way, that four-step formula is1. Whoa I cant believe what I just saw, heard, or read2. Wow Thats astonishing, amazing, unbelievable3. Hmmm Thats too good to ignore or not do something with4. Yes I see the wa y to use it. SoldIn those presentations, I dressed like Steve Jobs, but stopped short of becoming him. One of my other skill sets is deconstructing strategies into lockstep, Lego-like steps (such as the four steps above) that anyone can follow. One of those strategies is also a lockstep, Lego-like 10-step strategy that anyone can follow to build a very successful business. I discovered that this 10-step strategy wasalso the unconscious formula that Jobs followed to turn Apple from near bankruptcy in 1997 into the highest-valued company in the world after he introduced the iPhone in 2007.RC Why did you choose to perform the role of Steve Jobs instead of delivering a talk about him and his successes at Apple? Does this have any impact on how the audience engages with the lessons you want to share? If so, how?MGI had previously presented the 10-step strategy for success to audiences, who agreed with it but didnt find it compelling enough to commit to it. By now channeling Steve Jobs I dont have a script. I actually see and then articulate the world through his eyes as I retell the story of coming back to Apple in 1997 through 2007 I tell his story as him and cover all the 10 steps via a story. By actually being him instead ofplaying him, it mesmerizes the audiences, and to add to it, I take questions after I tell the story and answer them as Steve Jobs, still occupying his persona.RC What has the process been like for you? What steps have you taken in order to learn how to be Steve Jobs, in a sense? And what does it feel like playing the role of such a giant?MGThe process has been amazing. I am not an actor by profession. However, I have spent more than 30 years as a therapist channeling my patients and couples and expressing what they were feeling and meant to say but didnt have the words to say. That has helped me be effective as a suicide interventionist, death and dying specialist, FBI/police hostage negotiation trainer, jury consultant, key advisor, and co nfidante to founders, entrepreneurs, and CEOs.I have much experience doing role play in those instances. Check out this video from my hostage negotiation training (ed. note this is a hostage negotiation training, so the content may be upsetting to some viewer discretion is advised). But I have never taken on channeling someone regarding their life.Interestingly, I tried to mix the role play with switching over to a teacher role, but audiences who have seen it told me to drop the teaching, which is much lower energy, and just play Jobs the entire time, weaving the 10 steps into the story and then taking questions as him.At the end, I give out a handout with a 10-step process adapted from one of my published articles with the title, How I made Apple Insanely Great in 10 Steps and How You Can Do the Same.I dont do consulting or training myself anymore and have a team at the ready to work with companies that want to learn and implement this strategy.RCWhat do you hope people will lear n or feel when they see this show?MGI hope they will feel I have deconstructed the genius and secret sauce of Steve Jobs into a strategy that they can use to make their companies and lives insanely great. I also hope it will connect some of the dots regarding his psyche and psychology that havent been connected before.RCCan you talk a little bit more about the concept of connecting the dots and how it relates to the show?MGIn 2005, Steve Jobs gave a commencement address at Stanford that many consider to be the top commencement address ever given at a university. Jobs said many incredible and memorable things that day, including You cant connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.A brief excerpt from Jobss 2005Stanford commencement speech.Jobs ran out of future before he was able to connect the dots enough to make Apple a sustainable visionary company. He thought it would continu e under the leadership of CEO Tim Cook and Chief Design Officer Jony Ive. However, many will say that it has lost a good deal of its disruptive mojo since Jobs died.In this presentation, I connect the dots that Jobs didnt get a chance to connect and turn it into a story with doable steps that any company can follow to be insanely great.RC How/where can people see the show?MG I will post recent and upcoming presentations in my free Usable Insight newsletter that people can subscribe to by going to my website, clicking the Free Stuff tab on the right margin, and putting in their name and email, which I will never share with anyone else.In addition, I am sharing insights I am learning after each presentation in a LinkedIn Pulse blog series with a video outtake that they are promoting to several of their channels.RC What are your future plans for the show? Is this just a small project, or do you want to take it as far as it can go?MGIts currently in its off, off, off Broadway and off th e radar run. I will be giving it at a variety of small venues and to companies and organizations to refine it. After that, I hope to turn a part of it into a TED Talk, present it at much larger venues, and hopefully have the insanely great opportunity to present it at Apple in front of the entire company. After all I am Steve Jobs.

Posting memories on social media can make you more forgetful

Posting memories on social media can make you more forgetfulPosting memories on social media can make you more forgetfulWe document our vacations and share them with our friends on social media so that we can make the memory last longer. But a new study found that the use of social media can actually make us more forgetful about what exactly happened in those pictures. In anew paper published in theJournal of Experimental Social Psychology, researchers found that while sharing memories on social media may provide a permanent digital record of our experience, it is decreasing our own personal record in our heads.Study Social media is doing work of remembering for usIn a series of experiments, participants who recorded or shared their experience about a self-guided tour of a church on their phone had a 10% harder time remembering the original experience on memory tests. These participants enjoyed the experience just as much as the other groups did, but they had a harder time recalling w hat exactly they saw and experienced.Participants without media consistently remembered their experience more precisely than participants who used media, the study concluded. Together, these findings suggest that using media may prevent people from remembering the very events they are attempting to preserve.Blame the Google effectWhy does posting a memory make it harder for our brains to recall? The researchers suggest that it is because we outsource the work of remembering to our smart devices. When we task ourselves with externalizing the experience through technology, we are telling our brains that it is okay to lose something of the original experience, because the technology will remember it for us.Theres even a name for this selective amnesia - the Google effect, a phenomenon coined in 2011 by psychologists for how the netz replaces our brain as a memory bank. When faced with difficult questions, people are primed to think about computers and that when people expect to have fu ture access to information, they have lower rates of recall of the information itself and enhanced recall instead for where to access it, the researchers in that 2011 paper found. So next time you want to take a picture of that fun memory and upload it on social media for all to see, go ahead and do so. Just recognize that it may not make it last longer for you.

What to Do When Youre Bored But Have a Good Job - The Muse

What to Do When Youre Bored But Have a Good Job - The MuseWhat to Do When Youre Bored But Have a Good Job Hi Kyle,Ive been in my job for nearly 11 years now. Its well-paying, has great benefits, and it allows for a very flexible schedule. I have the opportunity to do both office and field work (Im in nonprofit public relations)- all for an awesome cause. However, Im super bored. I get this feeling the most when its slow (like right now), but Ive been feeling it more and more, even when Im loaded with work. I spent a hr of money on a career coach a few years ago, and after six months of soul-searching and research and matrixes and compiling Post-it notes of ideas, it turns out my current job meets my needs as a professional and is the best thing for me right now. So, what do I do with that? Basically, Im afraid to leave the money and schedule flexibility but desperately want a new cerebral challenge. Yes, I could find new projects to do within my current role, but Im not really motivat ed. (In the past, Ive tried to kick start something, but I lose interest quickly.) I could work at moving up the chain of command with the hopes of taking over a managers job when its available in a few years, but that doesnt really appeal to me either. Ive taken online courses to help expand my skill set for both my current job and to see what other skills I like and want to improve upon, and Ive found that has put a new energy into how I approach work. And yet, when I start looking at job postings, my motivation to apply fizzles. Thoughts?Signed,Bored and UnmotivatedDear Bored and Unmotivated,Thanks for writing in about this issue. Sounds like youve been coasting a bit and are disappointed to learn that your current role is the best thing for you. But maybe what you need isnt a different or better job. Maybe what you need falls outside of the traditional idea of work, and lies somewhere in the broader scope of your career. Sometimes the thing youre looking for happens after you pu nch out. So how do you find whats missing and get over the boredom? Here are three fresh suggestions 1. Start a Side ProjectIf starting new projects at work isnt giving you the stimulation youre craving, consider starting something outside the office. Working on a project completely unrelated to your 9-to-5 can open up new interests and give you better insight into what other fields you could potentially transfer into. It doesnt have to be a geschftlicher umgang idea it can be a blog, a photography website, or even a garden. What are you interested in pursuing when youre not working? What hobbies or passions do you have that you could potentially turn into a side gig?It could be the reason youre reluctant to apply for other jobs is because they all feel like a similar version of what youre doing now. And if youre unenthusiastic in your current role, its unlikely a lateral move is going to get you pumped.2. VolunteerPeople often see the word volunteer and immediately think of a soup kitchen. While that work is important and necessary, its different than the kind of volunteering I want to talk about today. Ask yourself what causes are close to your heart and pursue unpaid work with one of them. Whatever form it takes, it will expose you to new people and purposes and maybe alleviate some of your general dissatisfaction. Finding fulfillment outside of work- until youre either ready to seek a promotion or find a new job- may make swallowing the day-to-day easier.3. Take an Unplugged VacationIt can be hard to truly explore different jobs or commit to learning new skills while you have work obligations, regardless of how flexible your schedule is. So if you have PTO left to spare, consider taking a completely unplugged vacation. Separating yourself from work for at least a week and committing to staying away from your inbox (as much as possible, Im not unrealistic) will help you clear your head so you can maybe, just maybe, hear whats calling you. When you realize t hat a job thats great on paper just isnt doing it for you anymore, its hard to see a silver lining. But think about it Youre gainfully employed with schedule flexibility. Whatever the answer to getting out of your career rut, dont overlook the fact that figuring it out is easier when you have a steady paycheck coming in. Youll know when you reach your breaking point, and when that happens, I promise you, youll have all the motivation in the world to either seek out a promotion where you are or land a better, challenging gig elsewhere. In the meantime, there are plenty of ways to stay on your toes. This article is part of our Ask an Expert series- a column dedicated to helping you tackle your biggest career concerns. Our experts are excited to answer all of your burning questions, and you can submit one by emailing us at editor(at)themuse(dot)com and using Ask a Credible Career Coach in the subject line.Your letter may be published in an article on The Muse. What to do when the workplace Omarosa has choice words about your company

What to do when the workplace Omarosa has choice words about your companyWhat to do when the workplace Omarosa has choice words about your companyOmarosa Manigault-Newman. Her name sparks memories of her three runs on TheApprentice, but most recently she has spent time in the political spotlight and back to the world of reality TV as a contestant on CBSCelebrity Big Brother. But wherever you fall on the political spectrum, one thing is abundantly clear, as it has been for years now The formerdirector of communications for the Office of Public Liaison has no problem speaking her mind - especially when it comes to her experiences working in the White House under the Trump Administration.Omarosa is now a former employee, but shes leaving salaciousdetails about what she says she witnessed there in her wake.Watch Omarosa spill the beans in her own wordsOmarosa talks about working under President Trump during a conversation with fellow contestant Ross Matthews.I was haunted by tweets every single day, like, what is he gonna tweet next? she whispered. In response to Matthews question about whether or notlage anyone tried to step in and moderate the presidents behavior, Omarosa said, I mean, I tried to be that person and then all of the people around him attacked me.She responded tearfully to a question about who has the authority to say whats happening at The White House Its not my circus, not my monkeys, you know, Id like to say not my problem, but I cant say that because its bad.Omarosa nods gravely in response to Rosss question about if Americans should be worried.Cue the White Houses responseBut of course, there was more - this time, Omarosa talked about Vice President Pence. As bad as yall think Trump is, you would be worried about Pence. So everybody thats wishing for impeachment might wanna reconsider their life. We would be begging for days of Trump back if Pence became president, thats all Im saying. Omarosa said. So, what can you do if an ex-employee speaks ou t? Here are three steps to take if an Omarosa is badmouthing your company after being let go.Dont add to the mess In an article about the hacking of website AshleyMadison, lawyer Michael Trachtman told Mashablehow companies should proceed if an angry former employee speaks out.Unless the employees statements really damage you for instance, the employee is making false statements that really do impact your customers or employees leave it alone, Trachtman said. If you make an issue out of it, there will be little to gain, and you will probably make it worse the disgruntled employee will know that he or she has gotten under your skin, and that will fuel the fire. but dont be a pushoverRosabeth Moss Kanter, an author, a professor at Harvard Business School and chair and director of the Harvard Advanced Leadership Initiative, writes in the Harvard Business Review that you should respond to rumors immediately.Dont let slurs stand without a response that is accurate, persuasive, and cat chy,she continues. And put out the counter-story without repeating the insult.Be preemptive Make your employees feel appreciatedAnca Bradley, a Brand Management Director at Fruition, writes in Entrepreneur that there is a way to help keep employees from going off the rails. Its important to first hire the right people. This can involve a lengthier hiring process, but a company with employees that are happy and dedicated to their jobs is less likely to become a breeding ground for saboteurs, Bradley says. Disgruntled employees should be dealt with immediately. If they must be let go, proper exit interviews are a must. However, the best defense against sabotage is to first prevent it. Treat your employees well, and create a corporate culture in which every voice counts.

8 Ways to Gain the Respect of Your Coworkers

8 Ways to Gain the Respect of Your Coworkers8 Ways to Gain the Respect of Your CoworkersSome people just walk into a room, and every eye and ear are immediately tuned into them. Is this magic? Doubtful. In reality, that person has worked very hard over the years to gain the respect of the people who work around him. You can earn the respect of the people with whom you work as well. Follow the Rules Sure, on television or in the movies, its always the rogue cop or the office worker who pushes the limits who wins the rewards and praise. In real life, its the person who does what they are supposed to do. This is especially important if youre the boss or work in a management role. The boss who slacks offfrom working, comes in late, leaves early, and spends mora time shopping online than working, wont engender respect from the coworkers. While the effect of rule-following isnt as strong among peers, it still plays a critical role. People dont respect people who dont respect the rules. This is especially true in a workplace wzu siche most employees do follow the rules. After all, they were put in place for a reason. Whether to create workplace harmony or to fairly and ethically deal with employees, workplace rules most often are carefully thought out. Work Hard This is one area where the television shows get it right- that cop may break all of the rules, but he certainly puts in the hours. Now, working hard doesnt mean you need to work 80 hours a week, but it does mean that you need to work when youre supposed to work. If youre an exempt employee, youll probably need to put in a bit more time than the office norm. If youre a non-exempt employee, make sure that you clear all overtime with your boss before working it. You dont get respect by working off the clock or by surprising your boss with your time card. Working hard also means that you need to spend your work time on work. You wont earn the status of a respected employee if you are viewed by others as a person who steals time from your employer. Talk Less, Listen More You may think that the person with the most respect is the one standing at the head of the conference table giving the presentation, but thats not always the case. If you feel as if you always need to talk, youre not likely the most respected person in the room. People gain respect by actually listening to the ideas of others. This doesnt mean that you cant share your ideas, but it does mean that you need to pay attention to what others are saying. Remember, you were hired to do your job, and other employees were hired to do theirs. That may seem like a super basic statement, but, in practical terms, it means that other people are experts on tasks outside of your expertise. So, listen to what they have to say about their area of expertise. Recognize that, in listening to your coworkers, you treat them with respect. This respect engenders respect for you and what you have to say. Assume the Best About People and Situations When the accounts payable person tells you that it will take three days to get the suppliers check cut, dont assume that its because shes lazy. She may be lazy, but she probably also needs to follow required processes and procedures that restrict her ability to respond toyourtimeliness requirements. Just because you dont understand why or when something happens doesnt mean that a valid reason doesnt exist. Apologize and Admit Mistakes Youre not perfect. No one is. You will make mistakes. If you want respect, you need to admit your mistakes. Practice this statement, Im sorry. What can I do to fix it? The last part is critical in many situations- otherwise, the apology is just an empty statement. If youre the boss, you take the blame for the teams failures as well as your own. If youre an individual contributor, you need to take the blame for your own missteps. A mistake isnt a career ender. Not admitting a mistake can become a career ender. Take Criticism and Learn from It Having people respect you isnt dependent on people thinking that youre right all of the time. Its about people trusting you and appreciating what you have to say. Just like you need to take your lumps when you make a mistake, you need to listen to what people have to say about you. Your boss thinks your marketing plan stinks? Well, ask her why and carefully consider what she has to say. Your direct report thinks that your marketing plan stinks? Well, ask her why and carefully consider what she has to say. Those last two lines werent an accidental repeat of the preceding lines. Whether the criticism comes from above or below you must carefully consider what the person had to say. Go ahead and ask questions. They may be right. They may be dead wrong, but you wont know unless you consider it. Stand up for Yourself The above is not a suggestion tolet people walk all over you. You can carefully consider criticism and say, Jane, I heard what you said about the marketing plan not hitting the right target, but I disagree. I believe that the market research shows that blah, blah, blah. If someone criticizes your personal appearance, family status, race, gender, whatever, you can certainly call them on it. Im sorry, the fact that I look young has what to do with this? Standing up for yourself is critical to earning respect from coworkers and bosses. On the other side, though, dont go looking for offense where no offense is intended. If you get upset about every little comment anyone makes, youll look like a whiner. Some things, you just need to let them go. Help Others Succeed Think about who you respect the most. Is it someone who pushed people under the bus right and left on her way to the top? Probably not. (And if it is, pleaseconsider getting therapy.) Instead, you undoubtedly respect someone who was kind and helpful. So, if you want others to respect you, try doing the same. Take time to mentor. Dont get angry when your direct reports, peers, or bosses make mistakes. Just help them get the job done and done right. When you lift up those around you, you all rise together. - - - - - - - - - - - - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance journalist specializing in Human Resources.
